The Top 5 Benefits of Working with a (niche) Consultancy

In my 10 years as a consultant I’ve often noticed that there can be some cynicism about the profession, with consultants often viewed as overpriced, superficial problem-solvers who rely heavily on jargon and flashy presentations rather than real-world expertise. Either that, or we are greeted with the fear that we are only there with a remit to fire and restructure. While both these perceptions may have some justification, particularly perhaps for some of the bigger firms, smaller consultancies offer something much more than jargon and great looking PowerPoints.

So here are my top 5 reasons you might want to bring a consultant into your business:

  1. Specialized expertise: Consultants, particularly from smaller boutique firms, usually possess deep knowledge of the academic publishing sector and of specific functional areas, such editorial strategy, technology, or marketing. Our consultants have all spent time working inhouse, and we know what it’s like to sit where you are sitting.

  2. Objective Perspective: As outsiders, consultants offer unbiased analysis. We don’t have “skin in the game” to the same extent as internal staff meaning we can say things that your own team may find difficult, and we come at solutions without the history of how you got to where you are. This means we can identify issues and solutions without fear or favour, and can bring you advice which hasn’t been shaped by individual relationships or past mistakes.

  3. Identifying and Solving Problems: One of the most fun things to do as a consultant is diagnostics; we are like Sherlock Holmes for your business, seeking out evidence and identifying issues which might not be immediately apparent. We also really enjoy developing solutions and bringing new ideas to the discussion.

  4. Cost-Effectiveness & Flexibility: Hiring consultants avoids the long-term costs of full-time staff and allows you to scale expertise up or down as needed.

  5. Accelerated Learning & Change: As consultants we also keep up to date with all changes and trends in the industry, and we can bring these fresh eyes into your business. We also see it as part of our role to pass on this knowledge to your internal team, allowing them to take the reins when the consulting engagement ends.

There’s no doubt that consultancies who fit the stereotype do exist, but looking for a niche consultancy specialising in your field can often reap greater benefits and deliver long-lasting solutions and – crucially – make recommendations which recognize your particular constraints and opportunities. Don’t just get a flashy PowerPoint, look for a consultant who wants to help you succeed, and has the experience and tools to do so.
